What Do You Think of This Mom's iPhone Contract For Her 13 Year Old Son? http://bit.ly/13HXv7k

Some of you will like this post and some of you won't. You may feel the need to comment if you don't agree with me. Do not expect me to agree with you. I am not your kid. You cannot control their thoughts or mine either.....read on.

Basically in a nutshell the mom wrote up a contract between her 13 year old son and his parents about cell phone usage and the rules he will have to follow etc etc. Some of it is good advice (remember I said advice) some of it is oldey-timey outdated opinions and some of it is outright pure luddite nonsense.

I don't want to break down each of these points. If you read my stuff you probably can guess at which point on the road of life that myself and this particular mother share a sidewalk and what part we violently diverge on different highways in opposite directions. I don't have to be a bullet by bullet jerk.

But I would like to review some tips on parenting where I see some common blunders. Often parents assume they are in charge of everything having to do with their kid and then at some magic point when she/he is "older" they will become responsible adults. Two issues with this logic. At no time does the parent identify that they will need to change their relationship with their kid and at no time do they realize that this isn't going to happen all at once but in slow, incremental changes over time.

Lets oversimplify: Parents you will not have one stage/relationship with your kid you will have several. The #1 rule is: You are not creating clones or better versions of yourself. Ok? Remember that.

Here we go...

Hodpodge Skillset
