Recycled Shipping Containers As Disaster Response: School Built In Four Weeks After Earthquake

Just a few weeks ago I was reading how these containers were not very good for building large rooms out of.  I wish I could find that article now.  It would seem that these folks are doing just fine with a pretty neatly designed school.

Workbench Update: Worm Farmer

Ok enough about my reactions to news and articles on the web...what are you doing with that workbench Dan?!

First thing I did was neaten up the area in the garage.  That's not too exciting but it got rid of a lot of space that was being taken up by ....well  very poorly designed shelving. Which was not making good use of the space but just taking up space.

So I am inspired by reusing stuff.  I didn't say I was good at it just inspired by the idea.  I am also not afraid of a tool, powered or not.  My dad was one of those guys who if you marooned on a desert island with him he could make the island so comfortable that you wouldn't need to be rescued because cruise lines would start bringing people there for vacation. And he would do it with palm leaves and a bush baby walking on a tread mill.

Anyway.  So my wife Gardens and one of the projects I had in mind was a composter. Its a good idea....get rid of food waste...and feed the garden.  But I am a lazy man so I wanted to make a rotating composter so I don't need to get the pitchfork and rotate the garden.  Do you have any idea how hard it is to locate an old barrel?  I didn't want to buy one...they cost a fortune and it simply doesnt make sense.  I am reducing my impact on the planet by composting and I will do it by making more plastic.....wait.....

So....as I am cleaning out the garage I re-find this huge concrete water pipe section.  I know what your thinking but no I am not going to make a huge pumpkin launcher out of it.  And I vaguely remember stumbling on a link to a youtube video about worm composting and then another video about a worm tower.

This is great! I can compost, not buy anything, and not have to spread the worm castings.  It feeds into all of my needs the most important being laziness.  Now concrete pipe is heavy and drilling concrete pipe is ...a chore so I am pacing myself. And I promise I will get photos for you. Including my hastily made water dribbler to cool down my drill bit.

But there is a real content update.   Not a Tolkien research post but more sweat was involved I assure you.
